Known Issues & Watch Points

IMS bearing failure

Critical

The intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) can fail catastrophically on M97 engines. Single-row IMS (found in most 997.1 Carrera/S) is higher risk than the twin-row unit in some early cars. An LN Engineering IMS Solution upgrade is highly recommended before purchase or at the next major service.

Bore scoring (3.8 S models)

Important

The 3.8 L engine in 997.1 S variants can suffer bore scoring — wear on cylinder walls caused by oil starvation under hard cornering. Common on higher-mileage or track-used cars. Requires bore scope inspection before buying.

Rear main seal (RMS) oil leak

Watch

The rear main seal between the engine and gearbox is a common leak point. Oil contamination of the clutch or IMS area is a secondary concern. Inspect at every service.

IIMS (secondary air pump)

Watch

Secondary air injection pumps fail with age causing emissions faults. Replacements can be costly — confirm status before purchase.

Intervals are general guidance. Always refer to your car's Maintenance Booklet and consult a qualified Porsche specialist. Known issues are documented based on commonly reported patterns — not every car will be affected.
