Known Issues & Watch Points

Bore scoring (3.8 variants)

Important

While the IMS bearing was redesigned for 997.2 (no longer a concern), the 3.8 L engine can still develop bore scoring on high-mileage or heavily used cars. Bore scope inspection is advisable on cars over 60,000 miles.

DFI intake valve deposits

Watch

Direct fuel injection means fuel never washes the intake valves, causing carbon deposits to build up over time. Symptoms: rough idle, misfires at cold start. Walnut blasting clears deposits and should be done every 40–50k miles.

PDK mechatronics unit

Watch

PDK gearboxes on early 997.2 cars can suffer mechatronics unit issues. Regular fluid changes significantly extend service life. Avoid skipping the 4-year fluid service.

Intervals are general guidance. Always refer to your car's Maintenance Booklet and consult a qualified Porsche specialist. Known issues are documented based on commonly reported patterns — not every car will be affected.
