Porsche Boxster/Cayman
987.2
Performance— 3 options
Adds Sport and Sport Plus driving modes and a dashboard-mounted stopwatch. On the 987.1 this is the standard Sport Chrono; on the 987.2 the Plus version (640) became available with additional PCM integration. An important resale option on both generations, though not quite as binary to value as on the 997 range given the 987's more affordable price tier.
The Plus-spec Sport Chrono with PCM integration and enhanced Sport Plus mode, available on the 987.2 only. On PDK-equipped 987.2 cars, enables launch control. The preferred Sport Chrono choice where available on 987.2 examples.
7-speed dual-clutch gearbox introduced with the 987.2 facelift, replacing the Tiptronic S. Provides faster shifts than any manual and enables launch control on PDK-equipped cars with Sport Chrono Plus. A significant step forward over the previous Tiptronic in both performance and refinement.
Chassis— 4 options
Factory ceramic brakes with yellow calipers. Optional on all 987 variants. The same replacement cost warnings apply as on the 911 range — up to £10,000–£20,000 per set. Inspect disc vanes thoroughly before purchase.
Electronically controlled adaptive dampers with Normal and Sport modes. Optional on base and S models; standard on the Cayman R and Spyder. A meaningful chassis upgrade that transforms the 987's handling composure in Sport mode. Standard on the highest-spec variants — check if a car has this before purchasing a base or S model.
Lowered sport suspension with firmer spring and damper rates than the standard setup. Available across both generations. Provides a more aggressive stance and sharper handling at the cost of ride comfort.
Mechanical 40% rear limited-slip differential improving traction and rotation. Important note: PTV+ (electronic differential, code 221) was never available on any Boxster or Cayman — the mechanical LSD (220) is the only differential option across all 987 generations.
Exterior— 2 options
HID xenon headlight upgrade over the standard halogen units. A meaningful improvement for night driving. No PDLS dynamic cornering function was available on the 987 — the 601 is the top headlight option on this generation.
Factory electric sliding glass sunroof for the Cayman coupe. Not applicable to Boxster (convertible) variants.
Interior— 2 options
Multi-way electrically adjustable sport seats with lumbar support. Code 377 = driver, 378 = passenger. The most popular seat upgrade on 987 cars on the UK used market.
Fixed-backrest sport seats with fibreglass-reinforced shell. Code 375 = driver, 376 = passenger. The mid-level seat option on the 987, providing improved lateral support over the standard seat.
Technology— 3 options
Bose 9-speaker surround sound system. The highest audio upgrade available on the 987 — no Burmester option was offered on this generation.
PCM 2 base module with radio. Navigation was a separate add-on (code 670). No Apple CarPlay or native Bluetooth audio streaming. A PCCM+ retrofit is available for approximately £1,200–£1,500 through Porsche Centres.
Factory navigation add-on requiring the PCM 2 base module (665). Now outdated for regular use; most owners prefer smartphone navigation.
Option availability varies by variant and model year. SA codes are factory order codes — verify against a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Listing counts update in real time.
